PACT Support for Adults

PACT’s adult victim and witness support program provides impartial, empathetic and court approved support for adults who are required to give evidence in criminal courts, either as victims of, or witnesses to, a crime.

The entire process from arrest to trial can take 6 months to more than 2 years and along the way there will often be unexpected delays.

Our justice system is designed to ensure fairness – innocent until proven guilty – and this is an essential part of our country’s identity. But, this doesn’t make it any less frustrating for victims, witnesses and their families who are going through the justice journey.

This is why PACT exists! We have an important role to play in supporting victims and witnesses step-by-step through the entire process.

Here’s how PACT supports victims and witnesses step-by-step through their legal journey:

1. Information

The court process can be unpredictable, lengthy and frustrating. PACT is here to help victims with the right information designed to help them understand the process so they're better prepared and feel less anxious.

2. Preparation for court

PACT helps victims prepare to give evidence, by confirming dates, times and details of when and where they'll meet the victim or witness on their day in court. PACT volunteers can also assist with preparing Victim Impact Statements, supporting victims at pre-trial meetings with crown prosecutors, and court tours.

3. Support while giving evidence

A PACT support volunteer provides emotional support and a physical presence for the victim or witness during their day in court. A PACT volunteer waits with the victim, and – if approved by the court – sits with them as they give their evidence.

4. Financial assistance applications

PACT can help victims understand what help is available and apply for financial assistance available to victims of crime in Queensland.

5. After court support

Victims often need support after they give evidence so they can move on with their lives and start to heal. PACT's after-court support can include assisting with applications to the Queensland Corrective Services Victim's Register.

6. Referral

There is a range of support providers available to those who have suffered trauma. PACT supports victims with referrals to other agencies and support providers, so victims can find the help they need.

*It’s important to remember that every case is unique; not everyone will experience all of these steps or in this order. We are committed to offering a specialised support service to best meet the needs of each individual.
